Depending what it is you want to know, a wide range of social science methodologies are available to reveal how safety actually ‘works’ within your organization, and from such insights make tailored recommendations for beneficial change.

Research questions could include:

  • What did folks really think of our last safety initiative launch? How did it land? What could we do better next time?
  • What aspects of our safety management are the most problematic for folks to utilize? Why is this so, and how and what can we do to improve?
  • What are the dominant aspects of our safety culture and how are they influencing our safety performance?

Fred is a world-leading expert in the application of social science methodologies to construction industry safety. For over a decade she has been involved in delivering peer-reviewed, cutting edge work in this field. As a result, she is able to unpick and unpack the rich data within your organization in meaningful ways to answer the safety questions you really need to know the answers to.

Fred can either work alone, or with a small team (max 4) from your organization that could include safety folks and fieldworkers. Including colleagues bakes CPD into the process as they learn about research and research processes by helping undertake it. Even if they are not directly involved in the research process, folks from your organization will be involved in member-checking the findings, helping put them in an appropriate context in order to develop accurate conclusions and recommendations specifically tailored for your organization.

Social science methods such as interviews, participant observations, documentary data analysis and rapid ethnographies can all be employed to generate rich - and most importantly directly relevant – data about your organization. Various methods of analysis can also be employed in a number of different ways to answer different questions. For example, thematic analysis of interview data can quickly reveal what trends dominate, whilst more in-depth discursive analysis can reveal much more nuanced findings and start to explain why things might be the way they are.
